There is an important difference between the concepts of ‘strategy’ and ‘planning’. Strategy is about how an organisation relates to factors (usually external) that are not under its control. Planning is how the organisation deals with issues under its control. Strategic planning is about integrating these two processes.
Being able to sustain your organisation financially requires that you choose a good funding mix, so that you are not limited to one source of funding. This diversification of funding requires careful planning, thus a strategic approach to sustainable funding is necessary for every organisation.
Your organisation must have some idea of your current and future activities and needs. Your action plans should take into account what these activities and needs will cost. Based on the funds you have now, you can work out how much money you will need in the future to carry out your aims.
